While the bishops have responded forcefully to the inadequacies of President Obama’s so-called “compromise” on the contraceptive mandate, The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities has released a statement essentially thanking President Obama for his “accommodation.”
Shortly after the “accommodation” was announced by the White House, the AJCU released this statement:
The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) acknowledges and appreciates the compromise that President Obama has made to accommodate religious institutions in regard to the birth control mandate under the Affordable Care Act. We commend the Obama Administration for its willingness to work with us on moving toward a solution, and we look forward to working out the details of these new regulations with the White House.
The Jesuits aren’t alone, however. Michael Galligan-Stierle, president of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, who had previously called the requirement an impingement on religious freedom, said on Friday, “I’m encouraged by the president’s recognition of the inalienable right of religious liberty…I think we’re headed in a very good direction.”
Sister Carol Keehan of The Catholic Health Association released a statement saying:
“The Catholic Health Association is very pleased with the White House announcement that a resolution has been reached that protects the religious liberty and conscience rights of Catholic institutions…
The framework developed has responded to the issues we identified that needed to be fixed. We are pleased and grateful that the religious liberty and conscience protection needs of so many ministries that serve our country were appreciated enough that an early resolution of this issue was accomplished. The unity of Catholic organizations in addressing this concern was a sign of its importance. This difference has at times been uncomfortable but it has helped our country sort through an issue that has been important throughout the history of our great democracy.”
Now, it’s possible that any of these organizations could think this through further and change their perspective this. If so, we’ll keep you updated.

This is a no-brainer. One does not even need to attend one of their so-called Catholic colleges to understand just how fake Obama’s change in direction.
Do they really think that insurance companies will really just pay, without any monetary affect on them??
And they are “academics”???
Just another Jesuit insult to the Catholic Church…it is time to dissolve the Jesuit order! bpp
This time for good.
I’m sorry, I would never look to these institutions for a single modicum of catholic faith. The light of catholicity was self extinguished a long time as evidenced by their own public actions.
Go figure….they are all under the Obama spell.
Very disturbing…
I can’t believe they are unwilling to see through this smoke screen and believe that the insurance company will just pay it.
Entitlement brain washing, yeah, that’s what it is, they are all brain washed and can no-longer think for themselves.
But WE pay into the insurance companies so that the insurance companies can pay for the no co-pay contraceptives… Economics 101?
Why, oh why am I not surprised a bit at this? It’s bad enough to have enemies outside the walls of the fortress. But to have them inside, opening the gates of the city at the dead of night, is horrendous.
Anyone who doesn’t see the persecution that is right around the corner in this country is asleep at the wheel.
The Obama Administration proposal is WORSE than the first one…who do you think will be paying for this? We will as taxpayers; open your eyes. The ONLY option is to have the HHS Mandate rescinded.
This one issue in no way changes the Abortion issue. This was a small token. The Health Care Bill is yet to come.
These statements, made in haste, will just encourage President Obama to stand fast with what is in fact no accommodation at all. He’s playing a shell game and the wise are being duped. One can justify a choice by rationalize its apparent good. It still is objectively wrong and a violation of the First Amendment. The wise are being deceived because of their strong desire for so called women’s health care. It’s being forced on Catholics by the man who preferred an infant survivor of a botched abortion to be left unattended to die. Women’s Health Care is a euphemism for killing the human life begun in the womb. None are so blind as those who refuse to see the truth through the eyes of Faith. All they see is an opportunity to get free services especially to the poor whether or not those services violate the Church’s teaching. Nothing is free and will not proceed without serious consequences if the mandate is not rescinded.
Forgive the Jesuits and others applauding, for they know not what they do.
Whenever I see “SJ” after a priest’s name or a nun without her habit, it unfortunately causes me to have an immediate emotional reaction. I actually feel my guard going up and a deep sense of distrust descends upon me. I know this isn’t true of all Jesuits or nuns but it is becoming increasingly difficult to not broadly discriminate given the silence on the part of those who may be more faithful. This sense of vulnerability, the awareness that there are wolves in sheep’s clothing amongst us, is deeply disturbing to say the least. While I know that our Church has the promise of perpetual protection from Christ Himself, it is painful knowing our worst enemy is our own brother, whom we can no longer trust. Jesus had his Judas, and so must we. If these traitors in our midst think they can force a new church into being in their image, they need to think again. Judas, in the end paid a terrible price for his failure, and what he intended for evil, God intended for good.
Until and unless the church starts playing hardball and makes these dissenter either recant or leave… the minds of young Catholics are going to be poisoned by them.
The “Catholic” colleges and other “Catholic” organizations, including those in the Jesuit tradition, have been bought by federal money.
Just so was Fr. Hesburgh bought by money from the population suppressing Rockefeller Foundation of whose board he was a member.
Where’s the news in all this?
I am appalled at the thinking in what I considered “Catholic” universities. God help us.
Dear CNS:
Why is Carol Keehan still referred to as Sister, implying that she has some connection to the Catholic Church. And if she does, why does she?
As a one time proud product of Jesuit education (Saint Louis University) I have to ask why are Catholic Universities allowed to masquerade as Catholic institution while actively dismantling everything the Church stands for? Why is the Hierarchy totally unable or unwilling to firmly stand up and be counted regardless of the cost?
May God have mercy on the members of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and on the soul of “Sr.” Carol keehan of the Catholic Health Association for their outright betrayal against the moral teachings of Jesus Christ and the Holy Roman Catholic Church, in endorsing the Obama Contraception mandate “compromise.” These disobedient Catholics have once again betrayed the bishops of the USCCB and the Natural Moral Low. There will come a day when they will have to explain their actions to Jesus Christ…. LOTS OF LUCK! Maybe Keehan’s Obamb-Care singning pen has gone to her head!
With friends like this, it is a good thing Jesus told us to love our enemies.
Might I surmise that these Jesuits and Sr. Keehan are nothing but liberal-left wing politicos??? That is about all one needs to see. Hence, no need to pay them much mind. Their loyalty is to their socio-political ideology, which is directly in line with Obama. Prayer and sacrifice…
Satan needs converts – Satan buys the school administrators. God help us.
I am disappointed in the Association of Jesuit Colleges agreeing with President Obama’s action on the Health Care situation.
They have taken God out of our lives in many areas, but God will not stand for that. They will pay in the end and He will triumph. God help us all!!!
By now, I would think many Catholic parents are thinking twice about paying for a Catholic College unless they have the information to sort out the real Catholic institutions from those that are in name only. Are there any Catholic Universities that are faithful to Church Teachings that also provide engineering and science degrees? When will the Bishops start identifying the list of those in their diocese that are faithful?
The Jesuits and many Catholic Colleges and Univ. abandoned their Catholic roots many years ago. They are no longer Catholic and should not purport to be.
Jesuit trained Catholics of the last 30 years are some of obamas strongest supporters and voters, unfortunately for this country and for the Catholic Church – although they cannot articulate their defense of him with any clarity or common sense.
Maybe the Jesuits are not as smart as they and others thought. St. Ignatius of Loyala must be greatly aggrieved by this betrayal.
