Further Decline of Vagina Monologues on Catholic College Campuses

The bad news is that The Cardinal Newman Society can confirm that nine Catholic colleges and universities will be hosting productions of the depraved play The Vagina Monologues in 2012.

The good news, however, is that it’s the lowest number of colleges to host the play in a single year since 2003. The number of performances on Catholic campuses that year was 32.

The play itself is vile and distorts human sexuality by placing sinful activity in a favorable light, including lesbian activity and masturbation. It seems to take delight in reducing sexuality to the satiation of selfish pleasure and even declares a lesbian rape of a teenage girl her “salvation” which raised her into “a kind of heaven.”

Ironically, the play is often promoted as supporting the end to violence against women, and used as a fundraiser for women’s shelters. But whatever good intentions the performers may have are undermined by the play’s obscene and demeaning content.

“The few remaining Catholic colleges that host this vile play ought to look around at the rest of Catholic higher education,” said Patrick J. Reilly, President of The Cardinal Newman Society. “Most Catholic colleges are finding that social issues can be addressed seriously, morally and with genuine respect for women.”

CNS has monitored the internet and campus publications for evidence of Catholic colleges and universities hosting the Monologues. And we’ve contacted each of the colleges and asked the college’s leaders to confirm whether or not the Monologues are indeed taking place.

In the end, we can confirm that nine Catholic colleges and universities have been identified as hosting the play. While it is disturbing that any Catholic college would host such filth and present it to their students under the guise of doing it for a good cause, there is some hopeful news in that the number has dropped to nine from a high of 32.

But it also points out that there is much work to be done.

Gonzaga University still seems to be uncertain whether the play will be performed on campus, according to their student newspaper. We’ll keep you informed on that.

And while Providence College disallows the play from being performed on campus, the Providence College Women’s Studies Program is actively promoting two performances of the play off campus.

The following Catholic institutions were listed either on the website VDay.org or elsewhere online, or confirmed to CNS on the phone as hosting The Vagina Monologues in 2012:

Bellarmine University

Boston College

College of the Holy Cross

College of Saint Rose

Depaul University

Dominican University of California

Fordham University

Georgetown University

Seattle University

This is proof that pressure works. If you live in a diocese that has one of these institutions, call the Bishop and ask him to lend his influence.

Call the college and express your concern. If you are an alum, tell the college that you will no longer support the college in any way until they reverse their position.

    Above all, pray.

Excellent suggestion. I am graduate of a Jesuit college in 1956. Now i am reading lots of good things about ethics, morals, non PC culture, resistance to government attacks on religion, academic excellence etc of Hillsdale College MI. Worth a look as a worthy christian college along with the still many fine Catholic colleges/universities (sad to say now only a few are Jesuit Order affiliated) who are in accord with the pronouncements of Ex Corde Ecclessia regarding catholic doctrine and catholic colleges.

I notice most of these schools are Jesuit affiliated. Why doesn’t that surprise me? The shocktroops who formerly fought so valiantly and brilliantly in defense of the Pope, catholicism and a catholic faith centered life and education now appear to be leading the charge of some Catholic Colleges/Institutioons in the campaign to undermine these institutions of Catholicism by a repeated pinprick of Ex Corde Ecclessia as evident in this latest issue of the Vagina Chronicles.

Sad. I guess they haven’t heard the message of Fatima: “More souls go to hell for sins of the flesh than for any other reason.”

I agree. My son graduated from BC last May. What a waste of education dollars. I am so sorry I sacrificed to send him there. They call my home for donations. I will tell them as long as they participate in this trash, they can take me off the call list. They have taken enough of my money.

These colleges that are names above should have a CNS speakers visit these 9 sites and talk to the students about moral issues and that this is vulgar, and not to be attended by them

It’s very interesting & appaling that so many of the host colleges are Jesuit based! How the mighty have fallen.

Hopefully the students will be disgusted with the film – that’s what my prayer will be and, to be honest, if they are brought up (in homes that honour their Catholic faith) they probably wont go; they may go because of peer pressure but still be disgusted.

I am writing from N.Ireland and I think things have been slack (here also)since the 1980s. I remember my daughter coming home from Grammar school distressed because they had brought an American woman in to speak to them on sex education and it certainly was not Catholic teaching – I went to the school to complain but to my knowledge no-one else did.

I think globally we have a lot of back tracking to do.

    God bless our young people

Hail Mary, full of Grace. The Lord is with Thee.
Blessed art Thou among women and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus.Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Forgive us our lusts, our physical passions of the flesh during our time on earth. We are so very sorry.

Do we not have any control over Catholic Colleges? Who running the assylm? I am a catholic because I like the teachings. The disrespect we have for the church or any other respectful places is ridiculous.
Are any other Christian Universities participating? If not why us? If yes then we Christians need to forget what religion and come together like never before and stand up for what we believe in.

It is hard to believe that a Catholic School would ever allow such low level, sin-full play.

It is shocking to think that a Catholic institution would allow a play like that to be preformed and still want to call themselves Catholic.

Degradation of the human spirit should not be what an institution of higher learning is about. As was stated by a former instructor to me: “We only need to know that these abberations exist, we do not need to know the intricacies of them.”

Perhaps it is only 9 colleges, because most of the others have already held this despicable show on their premises. In fact, I do believe it is the second time for a few of these 9.
HOW can they call themselves CATHOLIC??

Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but couldn’t this decline just be because the play is getting old and has lost its novelty?

It is with deep interest that I read the article and the comments about it. As has been pointed out, the Jesuits almost seem to have a monolopy on this garbage. With the internet, it’s quite easy to obtain the name of the university presidents and their phone numbers or at least, the web addresses. Personally, I like making phone calls, emails are too easy to delete. Let those in charge know that they have a moral responsibility to the students and to the greater community. Also, by hosting such garbage as the Vagina Monologues, they’re giving scandal to the Church. Where is the “Church militant” when you need it ?

Shame on you, Providence College, for allowing your Providence College Women’s Studies Program to host two showings of the V Monologue, and shame on the girls for wanting to introduce this vile play to others. Just at the time when we are looking for colleges for our two children… Providence was at the top of our list for college, but not anymore.
