Fr. Michael Scanlan, TOR, retiring Chancellor of Franciscan University of Steubenville, has had a wide and substantial impact on the Church in the United States of America during his decades of ministry, according to an article by Tim Drake in the latest issue of the University’s magazine Franciscan Way.
Tim Drake writes:
In his 26 years as president, Father Scanlan transformed Franciscan University of Steubenville into one of the bright lights in Catholic higher education. What is perhaps less known is the tremendous influence Father Scanlan has had outside the University. His Legacy has had a lasting impact on the face of the Catholic Church in America, from the Catholic charismatic renewal to youth ministry, vocations, theology, and Catholic higher education overall.
“Major shifts in the Church have much to do with individuals, and certain individuals are called by God to have an influence,” says Patrick Reilly, founder and president of the Manassas, Virginia-based Cardinal Newman Society, an organization devoted to the renewal of Catholic higher education. ”What Father Scanlan has done for the University and the Church says much about who he is. Franciscan University’s impact on the Church extends far beyond what the University itself is doing.”
“I can’t look at anything that’s going on in the Church in the U.S., that hasn’t been impacted by Father Mike,” says Curtis Martin MA ’93, founder and president of Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS).
