California Catholic Daily is reporting that Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California, hosted pro-abortion rights actress Susan Sarandon on campus this week. CNS confirmed this from a cheched version of the University’s events page.
The Cal Catholic article reports:
Sarandon has been a longtime supporter of Planned Parenthood. She is mentioned in the Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s 2007-2008 annual report as one of many Hollywood stars who has lent her name to support the world’s largest abortion provider.
Sarandon was among the speakers at an April 2004 pro-abortion “March for Women’s Lives” in Washington, D.C., organized by Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Black Women’s Health Imperative, Feminist Majority, NARAL Pro-Choice America, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, and the National Organization for Women…
“Eight months pregnant with her second child, actress Susan Sarandon joined four dozen other entertainers using their celebrity to sell the message Saturday night that abortion must remain legal,” the Orlando Sentinel reported in April 1989…
Proceeds from this evening’s benefit at Notre Dame de Namur University will go to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of San Mateo County, which is sponsoring the event.

The Cardinal Newman Society joins with Cal Catholic in pointing out that
Sarandon’s appearance at Notre Dame de Namur would appear to violate guidelines issued in 2004 by the U.S. Conference of Catholic bishops, “Catholics in Political Life,” which said, in part, “The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.”

I am terribly upset by the daily briefs I receive about all of these supposedly Catholic colleges behaving in a way that is in opposition to church teachings. It seems there is no end to these offenses by the Catholic clergy/teachers/administartors. It is frustrating to read about this over and over and not see any action being taken against these offenders. Why does the church allow it? … Why can’t something be done about it?
We saw how ND disregarded the local bishop’s plea to not have Obama (pro-abortion) speak at ND. Looks like the “religious” (sic) that run these Catholic institutions wantonly disregard the instructions of both the local bishop but also the Pope. These Catholic institutions should be designated “non-religious” and they should lose their exempted status for they do not follow Catholic dogma.
