New Magdalen President Confronts ‘Dictatorship of Relativism’

The College of Saint Mary Magdalen announced recently that Dr. George Harne will become the fourth president of the Catholic College located in Warner, New Hampshire.  Harne succeeds Jeffrey Karls, who will remain at the College as VP for finance and operations.

Today, the College released letters from Harne and Karls regarding the transition.

Karls writes that he is confident Dr. Harne “will lead the College to a place of prominence in the order of Catholic higher education.  He is deeply devoted to Catholic education and committed to the highest standards for the good of the students.”

He continues:

The future of the College looks promising and we need the help of our faithful supporters to continue providing students with an unparalleled program of Liberal Arts education in the Catholic tradition.  Dr. Harne has established ambitious goals to increase enrollment and provide the best and at the same time affordable Catholic education in New England.  With all my heart I pray you will continue your prayers in support of the continued success of The College of Saint Mary Magdalen.

Dr. Harne writes that he is honored to follow in the footsteps of Karls whose “love for the College and the Church, and his faithfulness to his vocation will remain a model for all future presidents of the College.”

Looking forward, Dr. Harne writes:

We prepare to engage the world through the disciplines of theology and science, in which we learn to read the Book of Divine Revelation and the Book of Nature.  We do this through music and art, through which our hearts move toward our Creator and ultimately delight and rest in him.  Finally, we do this through the linguistic disciplines, disciplines that teach us how to speak the truth we have found, speak it in love, and speak it to the world.

In answer to this call to discipleship, we offer, we prepare our students and ourselves to confront with boldness the challenges facing our culture—the challenges of materialism, secularization, and what the Holy Father has called the dictatorship of relativism, knowing that our victory has been secured by the victory of Christ.

The College of Saint Mary Magdalen is included in The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College for its strong Catholic identity.  The Newman Guide is available online as a free resource to Catholic families here.

Praise God for a Catholic College that continues to promote actual Catholic magisterial teaching. Thanks CNS for your work in the effort to identify such institutions.
